Friday morning, we left the Cooperative State University punctually at 5:30 am. Our first stop was already at 7:00 am at Continental in Babenhausen, which is their biggest production plant. For visiting the first firm during the Summer School we were all in our business dress – first thing there was getting a lab coat for the factory tour though, so we covered up our nice clothes...
Divided into two groups, we got an interesting tour through the production line of the front instruments in the car – starting with the production of the plastic and ending with the full product. After seeing the factory, we had a presentation. First we got a general overview of the company where the focus was on the decision where to produce. Continental has many production sights all over the world. Reason for their decision is that producing near the customer in cheaper than shipping the big parts all over the world. Another very important decision for Continental is to choose between social responsibility for their German employees or exploiting globalization to have lower production cost.
We left Continental at around 10 am and still had around 700 km to go. During the tour we had two “Lectures on the Road", presented by students, which gave us a good first impression of Denmark and Odense. Also we got an insight in the Danish film industry. We arrived in Odense at around 10 pm.
After getting our rooms ready, we went to the center of Odense to get an idea of the city.
Saturday morning, punctual at 9:30 am we got on the bus to our first day in the Syddanks Universitet. There, Erik Rasmussen - our local coordinator - and his daughter Anna showed us around the university, including the Library and the whole campus sight. Very impressive for all of the students was a very big lecturing room, because we aren’t used to rooms that big. Afterwards the groups started to work on their term papers and had their first review with the professors.
The late afternoon we went all together to the beach. Some of us tested the really cold water.
